A Socially Responsible Enterprise
|
Our hammocks are made by small-scale artisans in the colonial city of Masaya, Nicaragua, where hammock-weaving is a refined art that has been passed down generation after generation. By introducing this tradition-rich product to new markets, our business hopes to generate new income for hammock weavers - many which are single mothers that are heading the household. "When there's no work weaving hammocks, I sell stuff in the street or wash peoples' clothes for money," said Guadalupe Hondoy, a single mother of four who lives in Masya's Monimbo neighborhood. |
In addition to bringing a quality product to a new market, we will invest in education for the families and communities where our hammocks are made and where rampant illiteracy keeps poor families in poverty. To begin, we will reinvest a portion of profits into school supplies and academic support for children of hammock weavers. Children like 14-year-old Auxiliadora, who lives in a house with a dirt floor and whose mom dropped out of school to weave hammocks at age 13. Our business was founded on a philosophy that socially responsible enterprise can educate and change lives in a more effective way than aid. |
Quality is a priority for our enteprise and will not be sacrificed. We work with the Suazo family of Masaya, a local supplier that has been recognized internationally for its attention to detail and has a hammock-making tradition that dates back to at least until the 18th century. Masaya is a colonial town of 500,000 in Nicaragua’s Pacific basin with a deep tradition of craftsmanship. It houses Nicaragua’s best artisan market, where shoppers purchase Nicaraguan handicrafts, pottery, clothing and artwork. We seek to expand opportunities for those who were raised in that tradition but still find themsleves living in shanties surrounding Masaya's colonial downtown. |
